Selektif reuptake inhibitor (Ssri), seperti yang lain antidepresan, kadang-kadang boleh menyebabkan atau mengaktifkan mania atau hypomania. Yang melaporkan insiden adalah dari 0.1% untuk 2% dalam premarketing ujian beberapa Ssri. Pesakit dengan gangguan bipolar biasanya lebih mungkin untuk pengalaman mania dari antidepresan. Terapi dengan Ssri perlu diberikan berhati-hati pesakit dengan sejarah mania atau gangguan bipolar. Sebelum memulai rawatan, ia adalah disarankan untuk secukupnya skrin pesakit untuk gangguan bipolar, termasuk sejarah keluarga bunuh diri, gangguan bipolar, dan kemurungan.
