Steroid boleh menyebabkan pencernaan perforasi dan pendarahan, biasanya ketika diberikan dalam dos yang tinggi atau untuk tempoh yang lama. Mereka juga mungkin topeng gejala komplikasi seperti peritonitis atau intraabdominal keracunan darah. Terapi dengan steroid harus dielakkan atau diberikan berhati-hati pesakit diverticulitis, tidak spesifik ulcerative colitis (jika ada kemungkinan yang akan berlaku perforasi, bernanah, atau yang lain pyogenic jangkitan), atau baru-baru ini usus anastomoses.
